Respite Care Charleston

Individual or Group Activities for Seniors with Memory Loss

Have fun while bringing joy to adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss or cognitive decline. Respite Care Charleston is a nonprofit organization that offers a half-day memory care program, twice a week from 10:00am to 1:45pm. Programs are held at five locations throughout Charleston County: James Island, North Charleston, Johns Island, West Ashley, and Mount Pleasant.

Members are dropped off while their families/caregivers get some much needed time off. Volunteers work with trained staff to help connect and engage with program members by:

• Playing brain games and doing puzzles
• Working on arts and crafts
• Cheering along or helping with physical activities
• Singing and dancing during music therapy
• Reminiscing and sharing stories and jokes
• Occasional musical performances, visits by small children groups or certified therapy animals, and other special guests/activities are also welcome, so let us know if you have a special skill or fun idea to share!

Depending on your skills and interests, you can also help with meal preparation, serving and/or clean-up, plan other games and activities, and engage and improve the quality of life of those living with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Volunteering doesn’t require experience or medical expertise – just patience, a warm smile and a willingness to try! Volunteers are asked to keep a consistent schedule with a minimum of one hour per visit, at least once a month. To learn more, or to schedule a visit, call 843-647-7405 or email info@respitecarecharleston.org.
